PRESS RELEASE

Friday, 28 June 2024

[Kigali, June 28, 2024] – Terra Energy is excited to announce its participation in the kick-off meeting for the Horizon Europe project, “Sustainable Energy Systems for Refugee and Host Communities in Africa” (SUNNY). The meeting took place from June 11 to 13, 2024 in Arua, Uganda, where project partners gathered to initiate this transformative 48-month project.

The SUNNY project, involving 18 partners from 3 African, 5 European, and 2 associated countries, aims to deliver highly replicable green energy solutions for Africa. It will enhance five Renewable Energy Technologies, adapted to local contexts and demonstrated in Uganda and Rwanda, benefiting around 1,300 refugees and host communities.

Dr. Mohamed Alhaj, Managing Director of Terra Energy, represented the company at the meeting, which included a site visit to the Bidibidi refugee settlement (one of the largest refugee settlements in Africa). Terra Energy is leading one work package in the project and several key tasks in covering market assessment, capacity building, technologies upgrade, and innovation management.

The SUNNY project will implement solar home systems, clean hydrogen and biogas cooking solutions, refrigerated food storage, and smart solar irrigation to promote economic activity and sustainable development. The project also emphasizes local value creation, cost-effectiveness, adapted business models, social innovation, and knowledge-transfer.

SUNNY aims to impact humanitarian energy practices significantly, involving 15 replication cases with interoperability of technologies, training activities, and policy recommendations. SUNNY is set to transform energy access and sustainability in refugee and host communities across Africa.
